Webinar: PDI – Introduction to the Portable data interface

Maison de la Simulation and the European Center of Excellence EoCoE organize a series of webinars on software technologies used in numerical physics and computational science. Webinars are online seminars accessible via the service GoToWebinar. They are opened to everybody and totally free.

Next session will be held March 6, 2020 at 10AM. It will focus on the PDI library and will be presented by Julien Bigot from Maison de la Simulation. The presentation will be in English.

Julien Bigot, tenured computer science researcher at CEA, will present the PDI data interface, a declarative API to decouple application codes from the Input / Output strategy to use. He will present its plugin system, which supports the selection of the best-suited existing IO library through a configuration file in each part of the code depending on the hardware available, the IO pattern, the problem size, etc.

This webinar will demonstrate the advantage of this approach in term of software engineering and performance through the example of the Gysela5D code.

Starting of the European project EoCoE-II – Energy Oriented Center of Excellence

Project description

The European project EoCoE-II is the second version for 3 years of the first project EoCoE (Energy oriented Centre of Excellence in computing applications). It aims at using the increasing computing power of super-computers to accelerate the European transition to energy source with low-carbon emission. It is one of the 8 centers of excellence in the simulation domain in the framework of the European program Horizon 2020. The project is built around 18 partners from 7 different countries forming a network of scientists and experts in numerical simulation and HPC including 3 computing centers. The project focuses on 5 application domains : wind, materials, meteorology, hydrology, fusion. Transversely, the project is structured around 5 technical pillars : numerical applications, programming models, linear algebra, input-output and ensemble simulations.

18 partners coming from 7 European countries

Each application domain will focus on few flagship codes to reach ambitious scientific objectives on future exascale super-computers. The total project budget is of the order of 8 millions euros shared between all partners depending on the allocated tasks.

Maison de la Simulation within EoCoE-II

Maison de la Simulation via CEA is an important partner of this project. It is a member of the board in partnership with the research center of Jülich and ENEA (Italian National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Sustainable Economic Development). Maison de la Simulation is also involved in scientific and technical aspects of the project.

Maison de la Simulation supervises the project as a board member.

It is responsible for the technical pillar on programming models (Work Package 2) and is involved in the optimization of the hydrology code ParFlow for sub-surface water flow simulation. It is as well involved in the technical pillar on input-output (Work Package 4) to integrate the PDI library in many applications.
