2+1-year Postdoctoral position in computational astrophysics (stellar and exoplanet atmospheres)   

Opened position for a 2+1 year postdoc


We invite applications to fill a postdoctoral research position to work on stellar and exoplanet atmospheres in the context of forthcoming JWST observations. The successful applicants will be based at the Simulation Lab and Astrophysics Department of CEA located on the Paris-Saclay University campus (https://www.universite-paris-saclay.fr/en).


The proposed work is part of the ERC project ATMO http://www.wilder.diskstation.me/erc-atmo/. The successful candidate will coordinate and contribute to applications of the softwares developed in the ERC Project ATMO to exoplanet and stellar atmospheres. The goal is to produce and use high-end simulation tools designed for the next generation of largest supercomputers (GPUs, Xeon Phis, etc) for the study of fingering convection in stars and exoplanets. By using an innovative numerical solver for low- and high- Mach flows, he/she will study the impact of fingering convection on the heavy-element accumulation in chemically peculiar stars (Michaud 1970, Théado et al. 2009, Zemskova et al. 2014) and its anolog triggered by chemical transitions (CO/CH4, N2/NH3) in exoplanet atmospheres (Tremblin et al. 2016). He/she will be part of the ATMO team at Maison de la Simulation and will also work in collaboration with astrophysicists at the Department of Astrophysics at CEA and collaborators in the international scientific community.


The applicants will have access to a range of high performance computing options, including stand-alone machines, local clusters, and national supercomputer facilities. He/she will have the opportunity to work on production level HPC codes running on the most powerful supercomputers. The candidates should have, or be about to obtain, a PhD. They should have some experience in at least one of the following topics: hydrodynamics, compressible hydrodynamics (finite volume methods), double-diffusive convection or convection in stars, HPC 3D simulation Salary and duration of the appointment will be commensurate with experience. The initial appointment is for 2+1 years. The expected starting date is flexible and is foreseen to be between September and December 2018, but could also occur earlier depending on the applicants availability.
